The conference attracted over 350 abstracts; in February, the International Scientific Committee carefully reviewed each abstract and has invited about 240 papers for presentation at the conference. The registration for FLOODrisk 2008 is open with the standard booking rate of £675 available until 13th June. From 14th June the late registration fee of £725 will apply.

Progress on face-to-face knowledge transfer

According to the European Commission Communication “The role of the universities in the Europe of knowledge”, “..the knowledge economy and society stem from the combination of four interdependent elements: the production of knowledge, mainly through scientific research; its transmission through education and training; its dissemination through the information and communication technologies; its use in technological innovation.” While all these processes are exemplified in FLOODsite, Task 31 is essentially involved in education and training.

At the end of 2007 nearly all the work of Subtheme 1.3 on Vulnerability will be finished or near completion. It is therefore appropriate to review the main research findings and outcomes of these socio-economic components of FLOODsite. In the second of two articles, Volker Meyer and Annett Steinfuehrer from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig and Sue Tapsell from the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University review the remaining two tasks that make up this theme.
