| The
Department of Land and Agroforest Environments at the University
of Padova is an international centre of education and research in
the agricultural and environmental sciences. The Water Resources
Section of the Department carries out fundamental and applied research
in the field of hydrology, water resources and watershed management.
Active research areas include hydrologic analysis and modelling,
coupled hydrometeorological modelling and hydrometeorological monitoring
system design (including radar hydrology), coupled hydrological
and landslide modelling, extreme flood hydrology, snow accumulation
and melt, geomorphology and risk-based decision analysis for water
quantity and quality management, application of hydro-informatics
and Geographic Information System to hydrologic systems. A Master
Course on “Hydrogeological risk assessment and mitigation”
is organised each year by the Department, in collaboration with
UNESCO and the National Research Council of Italy.
The Section has been widely involved in FP-V European research
projects, such as DAMOCLES (Debrisfall Assessment in MOuntain Catchments
for Local End-Users) and MITCH (Concerted Action on Mitigation of
Climate-Induced Natural Hazards). Among the EU funded and recently
completed projects, there are EUROTAS (European River Flood Occurrence
and Total Risk Assessment), RIBAMOD (Concerted Action on River Basin
Modelling, Management and Flood Mitigation) and EROSLOPE II, funded
under the Framework Programme IV. The Section has a staff of about
15 scientists, including two full Professors. The Section’s
infrastructure includes modern UNIX system workstations network
and direct access to the central computing infrastructure of the
University.
