| The
coastal geography branch of UniKiel is part of the Department of
Geography at CAU (Christian-Albrechts-Universitaet zu Kiel). It
has a long tradition and expertise in marine and coastal research
issues world-wide. Since the late 1980s the main focus of the branch
has been on studies relating to coastal morphodynamics and to coastal
vulnerability and risk assessment. Special emphasis of recent research
is on climate-change impacts, in particular effects of accelerated
sea-level rise and storm flood events. The work has addressed a
wide variety of aspects, from hydrologic and morphodynamic impacts
to quantitative analysis of socio-economic vulnerability and has
successfully developed methodologies for these assessments at various
levels of scale. Results of this work have been effectively implemented
in coastal defence master plans and strategies for Integrated coastal
Zone Management in Germany.
