Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences
(IBW PAN) was established in 1953. The Institute activity covers
fundamental and applied research in offshore and coastal engineering,
inland water engineering, soil mechanics and environmental engineering.
The staff has considerable experience both in theoretical, laboratory
and field investigations. At the moment there are 73 employees including
31 PhD holders. Scientific works, carried out in the IBW PAN, are
closely connected with industry needs. IBW PAN is also very active
in collaboration with foreign research and scientific partners.
The Institute is equipped with modern laboratory, as well as computing
and measuring facilities. IBW PAN is divided into several departments
responsible for selected research areas. The institute carries out
research on the following topics: wave fore- and hindcasting, measurements
of wind and waves, investigation and modeling of coastal hydrodynamics,
soil mechanics, river hydraulics, shore protection, flood prediction
and protection and coastal zone management.
The above activities are accomplished by theoretical modelling
and empirical studies. The theoretical solutions, mathematical models
of physical processes, supported by statistical and stochastic analysis,
are extensively tested versus experimental data available in literature
and verified by experiments carried out in IBW PAN. The empirical
investigations are carried out at the IBW PAN’s laboratory
facilities, as well as by field measurements.
