for Hydraulics (LWI) is a hydraulic engineering research institute
of the Technical University of Braunschweig which comprises 4 departments
including the department for 'Hydrodynamics and Coastal Engineering'
and the department of 'Hydrology and Water Resources'. The institute
has 4 full-time professors, 6 post-doctoral researchers and about
30 research assistants.
LWI is equipped with large laboratory facilities for hydraulics,
coastal and harbour engineering. Additionally, LWI is part of the
Joint Coastal Research Centre in Hannover where the Large Wave Flume
(GWK) and a 3D wave basin is located. Access to these major research
facilities has been used for numerous fundamental and applied research
projects within recent years.
Basic and applied research at LWI is focussed since 1971 on coastal
processes, coastal flood defences, harbour engineering, coastal
structures, probabilistic design, river engineering, rainfall and
runoff modelling, and research on extreme events. LWI has been involved
in many national and EU programmes on research and exchange of researchers
amongst which are major EU projects which have been coordinated
by LWI such as PROVERBS (Probabilistic design tools for vertical
breakwaters) and other MAST projects. Further examples of research
projects in which the coastal engineering department of LWI has
been involved and further information on the institute can be found
at LWIs website at www.lwi.tu-bs.de/.
