School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth has a long-established
group working in coastal engineering research. The Coastal Group
has a permanent academic staff of 5 and has been engaged in coastal
engineering research for over twenty years. The research philosophy
of the group is to undertake research that will enhance the future
understanding and effective management of the coastal zone. This
is achieved through a combination of novel field experimentation
and instrument design and through laboratory and numerical modelling
studies of coastal processes, hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics.
We collaborate with other Universities in the U.K., Europe and elsewhere,
with local authorities, government agencies and practising coastal
engineers.
Plymouth has a consistent record of excellent research in Civil
Engineering, achieving an RAE rating of 4 in 2001, and being placed
in the top quartile of Civil Engineering departments in the UK by
independent rankings. The School's work is described in over 100
publications of various kinds per year.
