 The
Institute of International Sociology of Gorizia (Isig) is a non-profit
research and cultural institution founded in 1968. Since 1985 it has
‘juridical personality’ (personalità giuridica).
Its Scientific Committee is composed of distinguished scholars from
national and foreign Universities and cultural institutions. The president
is Giandomenico Picco, former vice secretary of the United Nations.
The director is Alberto Gasparini, professor of sociology in the University
of Trieste. The scientific and cultural activity of the Institute
covers a broad range of topical areas and is carried out in six departments
and research programmes: International Sociology; Technology and the
Future; Sociology of Space; Mass Emergencies; Social Policies. A research
laboratory assists the departments in fieldwork. Isig publishes two
journals, ‘Isig Magazine’ and ‘Futuribili’,
and special collections of books. The research “Living with
floods” will be carried out by the Mass Emergencies Programme
(PEM). The Programme was established in 1976, after the Friuli earthquake
and has as its main focus the study of human systems under collective
stress due to events (or threats) originating either from natural
or technological disasters. The Programme, headed by Bruna De Marchi,
is organised as a network and has stable contacts with a large number
of organisations and institutions all over the world. It is involved
in a number of international, national and regional projects. The
PEM is endowed with a library of about 4500 titles. Its research activity
is documented by a series of preliminary papers (Quaderni), several
volumes and many articles in scientific journals.
