Research Centre IES (JRC-IES)
The Joint Research Centre provides customer-driven scientific and
technical support for the conception, development, implementation
and monitoring of EU policies. Within the Space Application Institute
the use of space derived data and other geo-spatial data from other
sources is promoted and developed, in the service of EU policies
related to agriculture, fisheries, environment, transport and anti-fraud.
The Natural Hazards Project within SAI provides scientific and technical
support including the production of risk indicators and damage maps
for the protection of citizens against forest fires and floods.
Tools are developed and provided to improve existing practices in
disaster management during the prevention phase, during and after
the crisis phase. Within the flooding activity both flood damages
and flood hazards are assessed using satellite imagery, GIS databases
and simulation models. Expertise in the institute is mainly in the
fields of remote sensing, GIS, simulation modelling, agriculture
and soil science.
