The River Ebro Delta is located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It is a very low-lying coastal area and, in consequence, it is extremely vulnerable to inundation, most commonly caused by a combination of eastern wave storms and storm surges.
This pilot study applied the science developed by other FLOODsite tasks (in particular Task 2, Task 3, Task 5 and Task 9) to evaluate the vulnerability, risk and defence needs associated with coastal erosion and flooding in the delta, identifying the areas most vulnerable and appropriate management strategies.
The study involved the Spanish Ministry of Environment (Government of Spain), the Department of Environment and Housing (Government of Catalonia) and the Department of Town and Country Planning and Public Works (Government of Catalonia). Other stakeholders included the Ebro delta Natural Park Administration, the municipalities, the local rice farmers and the salt industry.
