Failure mechanisms of dikes

Dikes can be breached by different mechanisms.

Fail mechanisms.
Fail mechanisms.

There are four important failure mechanisms for dike rings:

Overflow and overtopping The water level or the waves are higher than the top part of the dike. The water flows over the dike causing erosion of the land side of the dike.
Damage to revetment The outer protection layer of the dike on the water side becomes damaged by the waves. After that part of the dike is washed away.
Sliding of inner slope The land side of the dike becomes unstable and subsides.
Piping Water seeps under the dike creating channels which undermine it.
