 Risk model.
A good way to investigate risk is to look step by step at the different components that together form risk. The diagram shows a model that is frequently used.
- hazard (or source) is the cause of the flood,
- the pathway is the manner in which a hazard can effectively become a flood: a storm in itself may not cause a flood, but it will when it breaches a dike,
- the receptors are all the people, buildings, companies, roads, animals, natural habitats, monuments and so on in the flooded area,
- the harm the flood causes depends on the vulnerability of the receptors: if you are well protected in your home you will have less damage than people who have no protection at all. People with a weak health are more vulnerable to suffer from a flood.
